GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

An all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology, GATE is conducted jointly by IISc and seven IITs (IIT - Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Dept. of Higher Edu:, MHRD), Government of India. The GATE score that reflects the relative performance level of a candidate is used for admissions to various post-graduate programmes (eg. M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies (Source:" www.gate.iitb.ac.in ").

GATE exam score is valid beyond its purpose of higher studies screening. The GATE score is widely used by Public sector units (HAL, BARC , ONGC, HPCL, BPCL, BSNL etc) for employment screening purposes in recent years. It has already been an evaluation parameter for many core jobs in private sector. Interestingly, more companies are considering GATE score in par with B.Tech marks. So, even if you failed to score a first class in B.Tech, you can make a fight back with a GATE score.
